I recently took part in an Office 365 YamJam – basically, a bunch of folks in Yammer asking and answering questions, sharing information, and learning new things… it was a bit like trying to drink from a fire hose, but it was awesome!
One thing that we noticed really quickly was that we were getting constant notifications of every new post to the YamJam – and so Outlook was blowing up with email notifications every few seconds, and driving me crazy! (yes, I know… it’s a short trip
Now, I DO know that one way of solving this problem is turning off email notifications on a Yammer conversation, but this isn’t a Yammer Pro Tip, is it now? This tip will work for any email thread that keeps on getting replied to (or Reply-All’d to… you know who you are!)
First, turn on Conversation View – click View, then Show as Conversations:
Turn on for just this folder (Inbox) – you can turn it on for all mailboxes if you want to, but I only wanted it on for my Inbox this time around.
The first change that happens is immediately calming… instead of having 51 lines of an email I don’t want to read, I have a single line with the 51 messages all nicely threaded in.
The numbers are climbing…
Next, right click on the conversation, and click Ignore:
The result? This message and all future messages in this conversation thread will be deleted – sight unseen:
Now, it’s my deleted messages unread count that is climbing steadily, but silently – it was up to 170 before the YamJam ended:
Sweet, Sweet Silence!
Now, if you have a change of heart, and you decide you really, really want to see how many people in this distribution list have hit Reply-All in order to say “+1“, “Like“, or (my favorite) “Please remove me from this distribution group”, all you have to do is right click the conversation in your deleted items folder and hit Ignore one more time – confirm the dialogue box and you’re good to go:
What’s that? Control over your inbox? Rock on with your bad self!!
